(a) Dr.D.B.Sharma, Professor & Head and Dr.Ravinder K.Gupta, Associate Professor attended an Orientation cum Training Workshop of pre-service regarding IMNCI at SMGS Hospital, Jammu on 3rd November 2009. This activity was organized by NHRM and Department of Paediatrics, Govt. Medical College, Jammu. Faculty members from Department of Community Medicine ASCOMS, Department of Pediatrics, GMC Jammu and AMT Training School, Jammu were other participants in this Workshop. The trainers of the Workshop had come from Kalawati Sharan Hospital and Safdarjung Medical College, New Delhi.
(b) A Scientific Film on the topic “Maternal & Infant Nutrition” was screened in the Pediatric OPD Seminar Room on 14th November 2009. Para-medical staff from Pediatrics department and other staff members from departments of Gynae, & Obst. and Community Medicine also took part in this scientific activity. There was fruitful discussion among the faculty members present on this occasion. Dr.D.B.Sharma answered many queries raised by the viewers regarding various feeding practices among the children.
Blood Bank Department
Dr. Kumkum Sharma, Prof & Head was invited by Transcon 2009 at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi to participate in a National Workshop on 19th November 2009, on Blood Security to formulate a detailed road map and a pilot project to be submitted to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare for providing patients in urban and rural setting, availability/accessibility of safe blood from a pool of regular altruistic selected/screened blood donors, obviating the present practice of patient/relative running hither and thither to arrange for blood in the event of any medical, surgical or maternal emergency.
She also chaired two sessions in the National ISBTI Conference held at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi organized by A.I.I.M.S. New Delhi.
Pulmonary Medicine Department
(a) RNTCP Modular Training for a batch of 20 doctors and 50 Para-medical staff, in two batches of 25 each was conducted from 26th October to 7th November 2009 at ASCOMS & Hospital by the Deptt. of Pulmonary Medicine. Three facilitators were Dr.R.N.Dubey, Prof & Head Community Medicine, Dr.Ravi K.Anand and Dr.Sanjeev Narang.
(b) World COPD Day was observed on 18th November 2009. Deptt. of Pulmonary Medicine organized a Free COPD Detection Camp at ASCOMS complex which was attended by a good number of patients. Free Spirometery tests were conducted and audio-visual methods of correct use of inhaler was also shown to the people attending the camp. In all 35 patients suffering from COPD were detected and put on treatment.
II. HEALTH CARE PROGRAMMES
(a) Free Medical Camp
(i) 157th Free Eye camp was organized by ASCOMS & Hospital in collaboration with “SEWA” a National Social Service organization at Village Maralian, Tehsil Miran Sahib on 3rd November 2009. Dr.S.S.Soodan, Director Medical, ASCOMS was invited to inaugurate the camp. Dr.Amarjeet Singh Bali, Asstt Prof., Dr.Manisha Sethi, Asstt Prof. and Dr.Sunita Kumari, Jr. Resident from Ophthalmology Deptt, examined 181 Eye patients. Dr.Soodan also addressed the gathering and emphasized the need for proper eye care to prevent blindness. Free medicines were also distributed to the needy.
42 patients were also booked for free cataract operation and Intra-ocular implantation with small incision surgery at ASCOMS Hospital.
(ii) 158th Free Eye, Paediatrics and Gynae. camp was organized by ASCOMS & Hospital at Village Slaher, Tehsil Bishnah on 24th November 2009. Dr.Priyanka Sodani, Sr. Resident & Dr.Sunita Kumari, Jr. Resident Ophthalmology examined 117 Eye patients. Dr.Ashwani Kumar, Sr. Resident Paediatrics Deptt examined 41 patients and Dr.Anjli Manhas, Jr. Resident from Deptt. of Gynaecology examined 7 patients. Free medicines were also distributed to the needy.

(iii) A Free Eye Checkup Camp was organized by ASCOMS & Hospital at Housing Corporation, Co-operative Public School, Tawi Vihar, Sidhra, Jammu on 14th November 2009. Dr.Priyanka Sodani, Senior Resident from Ophthalmology Deptt, examined 213 children and briefed them about proper eye care. 30 cases of Refraction were also detected and advised further checkup/treatment at ASCOMS Hospital.
(b) U.T.H.C. Chatha
(i) Specialty clinics at UTHC Chatha were held by the departments of Paediatrics, ENT and Ophthalmology in which 33 patients were examined. 106 patients were examined in general OPD and 13 patients referred to different specialties for further checkup/ treatment at ASCOMS Hospital, Sidhra.
(ii) Every Friday School health examination of students of Govt. Higher Secondary School, Bhour Camp, Chatha is being conducted by Dr.Kiran Bala, Leturer, Dr.B.K.Koul, Medical Officer of Health and Dr.Sapna Sadotra, Tutor as a part of school health examination of students. 54 students were examined during the month of November 2009 and various defects found during health examination were informed to the school management for taking proper remedial action.
III. OBSERVANCE OF WORLD AIDS DAY 2009
World AIDS Day-2009 was observed in ASCOMS & Hospital on 1st December 2009 with the purpose to bring better understanding and awareness among the medical students and Para-medical staff of the Institution. NSS volunteers of pre-final year batch organized and conducted this programme.
On this occasion, Dr.A.Kumar, Director Principal was the Chief Guest and Dr.R.N.Dubey, Prof & Head Community Medicine department, delivered welcome address. Dr.A.Kumar, in his inaugural address also highlighted various aspects of this dreaded disease and steps to be initiated for its proper care and protection. The students displayed following items: -
i) Poster making competition was held. 17 medical students participated and winners were; 1st Gurleen Kour, 2nd Raja & Savneet and 3rd Divyanjana Jasrotia.
ii) Seminar covering various aspects of AIDS. The speakers were Aditya Mahajan, Arashdeep Singh, Nikita Gandotra, Manan Shah, Malvika Jandyal, Hashash Singh and Jeevitish Khoda.
iii) A dance with the theme of “Heal the World” by Prachi Dubey, Apeksha Gupta and Divyanjana.
iv) A skit “Jago Zara” conduted by Pranav Gupta and Rajdeep Singh. Main actors were Asim, Ahmer and Khushwant Singh.
v) A song by Rajdeep Singh and Usman. Music was given by Akif Kichloo and comparers were Aarushi Sharma, Vishavnoor, Shagun, Aaditya Soodan and Dupinder Kour.
vi) Icha Gupta and Bharti Gupta conducted signature campaign and it has been kept in the museum of Deptt. of Community Medicine.
In the end Dr.A.Kumar, Director Principal, Dr.Mumtaz Goni and Dr.V.K.Gandotra distributed prizes to the participants. Main organizers of the function were Abhishek Sachdeva and Arashdeep Singh
IV. FREE TREATMENT TO PATIENTS BELONGING TO ECONOMICALLY WEAKER SECTIONS
During the period from 1st November to 30th Novemberr 2009, 89 patients were admitted and given free treatment in accordance with the norms prescribed by J&K Govt.
